Gordon O. Mortenson Memorial Scholarship

Gordon O. Mortenson Memorial Scholarship

Gordon Mortenson (Gord) was a big sports fan and played both baseball and football in Kane PA. Not only did he play sports, he also donated countless hours of his time managing and coaching all ages of youth baseball. His biggest managerial accomplishments were he managed the West Ellicott Phillies Little League team (ages 11-13) to two consecutive undefeated seasons and also managed the Southwestern Blues, a Babe Ruth baseball team (ages 13-15), where his players competed for the championship for the State of New York.

Gord, assisted by his wife of 63 years (Jean) taught all of “their” players that education was just as important as sports. He graduated from Penn State with a BS in Forestry and encouraged their players to seek higher education opportunities. Mort went to work for National Fuel Gas Company in 1957 and worked there for 36 years before retiring in 1984 as superintendent for Western New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania.
