Carol White Memorial Scholarship
Carol White taught at Cecil College as an Associate Professor of Art for over forty years and coordinated the Fine Arts Program. She inspired countless students through her teaching, artwork and dedication to the College community. She earned a Master of Fine Arts from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore and undergraduate degrees from Harford and The University of Delaware.
She was an avid traveler whose destinations included South and Central America, Mexico, Haiti, Cuba, Egypt, Morocco, Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, as well as various Scandinavian and European countries. Exposure to different cultures and personal life experiences were major influences in Carol’s work. She worked in both 2-D and 3-D disciplines from large figurative work to smaller, more whimsical pieces.
Carol exhibited in various one person and group shows on the East coast, including the White House where her work is on permanent collection. Renowned for her ceramic work, Carol wrote, “I love the tactile quality and the often-serendipitous aspect of working in clay. The very nature of the material fires up our instinct to create.”
Carol believed her inspiration developed from her childhood experiences growing up around unusual animals. “I get a kick out of combining forms that do not belong together, maybe a bird-like body with elephant-like feet and a human head,” Carol wrote.
While most of her pieces are decorative in design, they are also functional. She explained, “Even though I like the idea of whimsy and not taking things (including our art work) too seriously, the practical side of me seems to want the most sculptural of pieces to have a function. Or maybe it’s just the challenge of creating.”
Carol passed on August 13, 2016, but left a legacy at Cecil College and inspired many students, friends and colleagues. Carol was awarded Associate Professor Emeritus Status by the Board of Trustees on August 25, 2016.
